At HTV, team spirit and passion for basketball have been our driving force since 1990. Born from a historic merger, the club carries values of solidarity and excellence, bringing together players, leaders and supporters around a common ambition: to shine on the courts and inspire beyond.
Year 1990, two cities of the landscape basketball varois, Toulon and Hyères, forget their quarrels, their oppositions, their differences, their colorful derbies and get around a table to lay the foundations of a great club. A historical rapprochement. An avant-garde idea. A breath of modernism.
The Club Sportif Varois (CST) born in 1948 and the Omni Sports Hyèrois (OSH), which emerged four years later in 1952, will become one. Some leaders, some political decision-makers, some visionaries therefore decide to join forces to access the elite of professional basketball. Take the final step towards the summits by finding new resources and adding skills.
Are they inspired by the magnificent rapprochement between Orthez and Pau, a fusion that allowed the Béarnais two years earlier to climb the last steps of the elite? It is not forbidden to think so, especially from two connoisseurs of the orange ball like Philippe Legname (Hyères) and Francis Beaux (Toulon), the kingpins of both clubs. The addition, the rapprochement, the reason, will boost the new club created under the name of Hyères-Toulon Var (HTV). A patronym that will become a recognized brand.
Pierre Galle, former international, will be one of the first coaches of the HTV. Before the president Jean-Luc Théry entrusted the keys of the project to a child from the club, Jean-Louis Borg.
In six years, Borg leads the HTV from Pro B to Pro A, thus achieving one of the greatest achievements of the club. This first chapter is marked by memorable performances, such as the Coupe de France match against CSP Limoges in 1997, where HTV narrowly lost after an incredible performance from the back-man, William Dumas.
After ten years of magnificent success, Jean-Louis Borg will leave to work for Vichy and Dijon, two clubs that he will also move from Pro B to Pro A very quickly. One of the highlights of this golden period stamped Borg, in the 90s, a gala meeting in the Coupe de France against the great CSP Limoges (Forte, Bonato, Weis, Occansey, etc...) already champion of Europe. Clash organized at the Zenith Omega of Toulon! A short defeat (92-103) with that evening a Lear on fire (40 points) and at the controls a mischievous leader with noticed talent, a certain William Dumas.
Later, under the direction of Alain Weisz, the Marseillais who coached in all corners of France as well as the French team of a beginner named Tony Parker, the HTV will return to the heights. The arrivals of Sean Colson, Tony Williams and Vincent Masingue are not unrelated to this new ambition. The club leaves the outdated Salle des Rougières, full of memories, to settle at Espace 3000, before joining the Toulon Sports Palace in 2006.
Before and since heavy renovation work of the Espace 3000, the HTV will play in its two mythical addresses of Toulon and Hyères.
In 2008, the club, recognized by the highest authorities, will organize the week of As. The HTV reached the semi-final after defeating SLUC Nancy, the leader of the Pro A. In the penultimate clash, he faced Vichy of... Jean-Louis Borg in a crazy room where no longer a seat is available. He will lose at the last second (71-72) after a demonstration by Sean Colson with a stick.
Unfortunately, the American leader will break his Achilles tendon before the end of the shock and leave his team orphaned and without their guide. The club will continue its good run the following year by qualifying for the playoffs where it will lose twice in quarter-time against ASVEL. The team will nevertheless participate in the EuroCup.
The following year, it will be again a European tournament, the EuroChallenge. But the first financial problems arrive and complicate the task of the sports field. The club then goes before the authorities who strongly limit the height of its payroll. Without financial means, despite some good picks (Morlende, Rick Hugues, Krupalija, Dobbins, Fein, Gordon), it was the beginning of the downhill and the return to Pro B in 2012. The duo Jean-Aimé Toupane - Laurent Legname will succeed to Alain Weisz.
After a few years where the club will rely on training and youth, it returns to Pro A (Jeep Elite) in 2017 and stays there for one year. Despite a great start (4 wins), it will finish last in the championship and will go down. Riddled with debt, back to the wall, the leaders give in to the temptation of selling their rights to an American owner of the new Paris Basket who wants to settle very quickly in the hierarchy. The deal is accepted. The Var club, decapitated, returns to National 3 with its association in the anonymity of the amateur championship.
It is William Dumas, another child of the club, who relaunches the machine and invents a future. A rise in Nationale 2 and he manages to convince a new investor, Gilles Garcia, to take the presidency and to be interested in the adventure.
Laurent Sciarra, the club’s former and Olympic silver medallist in Sydney, leads a team that offers an amazing season and returns to National 1. Despite this immense success, plagued by internal relationship issues, the president throws in the towel. Laurent Sciarra does not pursue the adventure. The club is again in difficulty.
Vincent Masingue, the faithful, accepts the impossible mission. After a nightmarish year and abandoned by (almost) everyone, the club loses its place in National on the last day. In the emergency and faced with so much injustice and cumulative misfortune, around Jean-Pierre Giran, mayor of Hyères, the last living forces, the last enthusiasts, the last lovers gather to try to write a new chapter.
Mathieu Perrymond and some friends will hear the call and respond with conviction. William and Aurélie Dumas are still the kingpins. Jean-Louis Borg, at the end of an adventure in Dijon but a Var with a heart, will let himself be seduced to take over the coach’s baton. Especially administratively, the new management team obtained a draft in National.
With a very small budget, with maintaining it as the only (first) ambition, the HTV will perform miracles for its first season and directly obtain its pass for Pro B. By finishing first in the first part and again first in the playoffs. The parenthesis of the sale at Paris Basket is closed. The HTV has regained its place in the National Basketball League. The adventure continues...
